Education built through teamwork strengthens school education communities in Yucatan

The Secretariat of Education of the Government of the State of Yucatan (SEGEY), in coordination with the Alberto Baillères Foundation, consolidated a model of community co-responsibility through the signing of Social Commitment Agreements on the campuses of CECYTEY 06, CETIS 112, and CBTIS 95 [Technological Upper Secondary Schools] aimed at strengthening the active participation of education communities.

This strategy promotes direct collaboration between students, educators, and parents in caring, improving, and making full use of educational spaces, creating more appropriate environments to students’ comprehensive development.

SEGEY head Juan Enrique Balam Várguez emphasized that this framework fosters the consolidation of the social fabric from within schools themselves by fostering values such as identity, commitment, and a sense of belonging.

“When a community gets involved in caring for and transforming its spaces, it not only improves its environment but strengthens values, identity, and commitment,” Balam Várguez stated.

Rosy Gluyas Fitch, Director General of the Alberto Baillères Foundation, noted that this model transcends infrastructure by promoting the collective construction of education environments based on respect, teamwork, and active participation.

The program foresees improvement actions on the abovementioned campuses accompanied by technical advisement for infrastructure development and the creation of new spaces that address each institution’s current needs.

Senior staff from the participating schools agreed that this initiative marks a new phase in academic education, focused on community involvement and shared commitment.

Likewise, students highlighted the importance of collaborative work as a basis for creating positive changes in their education environments.

As part of this institutional strengthening, a collaboration agreement was formalized between the City of Mérida and Yucatan’s Institute for Development and Certification of School Infrastructure (IDEFEEY) aimed at guaranteeing technical and operational support for projects resulting from these commitments.

Through these actions, SEGEY reaffirms its commitment to promoting upper secondary education with a participative approach aimed at consolidating solid, future-oriented education communities in Yucatan.
