On May 2, the “Transforming as a Community” program of educational grants was launched in the auditorium of Escuela Preparatoria Oficial 94 (EPO 94) [Upper Secondary School], in Ecatepec, State of Mexico. This program, which will offer 100 educational grants, is aimed at students who will be in their second or third year of upper secondary school during the 2023-2024 school year and is the result of a partnership between the Alberto Baillères Foundation and Gol por México, a joint program of GNP Seguros and the Televisa Foundation.
In addition to promoting school retention among students with high grade point averages, one of the program’s objectives consists of having candidates propose and develop a social project for the community. These projects will be evaluated by the selection committee; to this end, students will receive training on May 30 on how to present their proposals. Beneficiaries will receive different types of mentoring during the 2023-2024 school year in order to carry out their project of improving their educational environment. In this way, students will become agents of change in their community.
EPO 94’s principal, Guadalupe Barrera Cortina, inaugurated the event. In her speech, Barrera expressed the conviction that education changes lives, as well as her confidence that the “Transforming as a Community" grant program will contribute to closing the inequality gap and improve the lives of the students benefitted and their families.
Later, Alicia Lebrija Hirschfeld, Executive President of the Televisa Foundation, affirmed that “what we are rewarding with this grant is not just effort: it’s commitment to supporting your own community.” She urged students to stand out and be the best in their community and country in order to later compete with the best in the world.
Leonardo Pin Fernández, GNP Seguros representative and Education Development Leader, also spoke at the rostrum. After highlighting the partnership between Gol por México, the Alberto Baillères Foundation, and the EPO 94 community, he assured attendees that “Transforming as a Community” grants will “demonstrate the virtuous circle that education creates and the impact that can be made in the educational habitat.”
For her part, Rosy Gluyas, Director General of the Alberto Baillères Foundation, recalled that, for five years, joining forces has allowed joint work to confront the challenges that the EPO 94 community has faced. She discussed features of the “Transforming as a Community” grants, which not only reward academic performance but also invite students to develop a project to transform their community. In this sense, she emphasized “the importance education has in terms of transforming human beings into better people, into agents of change who promote the development of their community and their country.”
After these presentations, representatives of partner institutions signed the Letter of Collaboration on the Transforming as a Community Grants Program. Next, Perla Barrera Trejo and Justin Ismael Arroyo Martínez, students at EPO 94, expressed their gratitude and their commitment to making the most of the educational grants and overcoming whatever challenges may arise. Also participating were Israel Jerónimo López, State of Mexico Deputy Secretary of Upper Secondary Education, and Yantz Miguel López, a native of San Felipe del Progreso and beneficiary of the Gol por México program.
The ceremony concluded with a dance prepared by the members of EPO 94’s dance workshop, who presented folk dances associated with the Fiesta del Palmar, a traditional festival in the state of Campeche. At the end of the event, guests from GNP Seguros, the Televisa Foundation, and the Bécalos program toured the school’s facilities, guided by education authorities and Alberto Baillères Foundation personnel.
